RM150 million allocated for Lapok road: Lihan

10 Jan 2009

MIRI: The long-awaited Lapok road will finally be built as the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) has approved a RM150 million allocation for it last week.

Telang Usan assemblyman Lihan Jok yesterday said that this was good news to thousands of his constituents using the road daily.

Although Lapok road is not located in Telang Usan, indigenous people from this huge constituency have to use Lapok road to reach Miri.

Lapok road is located in Marudi constituency, which together with Telang Usan constituency, make up the Baram parliamentary constituency.

All three constituencies - Baram parliamentary, Marudi and Telang Usan state-are Barisan Nasional-controlled.

Baram constituency was wrested from the opposition in 1995 when incumbent Datuk Jacob Dungau

Sagan won against environmentalist Harrison Ngau, and Telang Usan state constituency went to the BN when incumbent Lihan Jok created a major upset by unseating veteran politician Kebing Wan in the 2001 state election. He successfully defended the seat for BN in the last state election in 2004 against Kebing.

Lihan has worked hard to turn the predominantly Orang Ulu constituency from an opposition to a BN stronghold.

Commenting on the approval for the Lapok road project, Lihan said it showed the government cared for the rural people during these difficult times.

“When the road is tar-sealed, not only will it cut the travel time but reduce the high maintenance cost of vehicles resulting from the bad road conditions,” Lihan said.

“The allocation was only RM50 million initially but the EPU decided to build the road in one go hence the RM150 million approved for Lapok road. It will be built from Lapok Bridge to Beluru town,” he added.

Lihan said this was just one of the many steps taken by the government to cushion the effect of the global economic downturn on rural people.

“We are spared economic hardships as the government has taken various measures to soften the blow from the global economic crisis. We should be grateful to our leaders and government for this,” Lihan added.
